Introducing TuneIn Amplifier

Knowledge is power.

Smartphones. Tablets. Laptops. TVs. Digital receivers. There are lots of new ways for people to listen to the radio, and analyzing your station’s digital traffic can be cumbersome if not daunting.

Today we’re excited to announce a product built just for our broadcast partners, called TuneIn Amplifier, to shed light on this situation. TuneIn Amplifier is a free, simple tool that provides all broadcasters who have stations on our service visibility into their TuneIn traffic. With over 30 million monthly active listeners and a presence across 230 countries and territories, data from TuneIn can be used as a core sample to better understand how people listen to your station.

TuneIn Amplifier is fast, updating information daily, reflecting:

  • The total tunes (listens) your stations received
  • The total unique listeners for each of your stations
  • The average time listeners spent tuning in to each of your stations
  • The number of listeners from each country who tuned in to each of your stations (for the U.S., this information can be segmented by state)
  • The donation taps each of your stations generated via TuneIn Donate (available for listener-supported stations only)

This data can be sorted by individual months, a custom date range or a rolling 30-day period. All listener data is on the aggregate level; no individual information is shared.

We chose these metrics based on requests from broadcasters who reached out to us with ideas on how we could help them learn more about their audience. If you are a broadcaster and have any suggestions for new additions or improvements to TuneIn Amplifier, please send them to broadcasters@tunein.com.

In addition to these free analytics, you can update your TuneIn profile through TuneIn Amplifier, making your station more discoverable within our service and strengthening your brand.

This version of TuneIn Amplifier is only the first step, and we look forward to providing even more tools in the near future to help you succeed.

TuneIn Availability in Ford SYNC AppLink

TuneIn Radio App to Offer Drivers 50,000+ Global Stations Through Voice-Controlled Ford SYNC AppLink

  • TuneIn Radio app will offer drivers more than 50,000 AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations featuring music, sports and news from around the world
  • The addition of the TuneIn Radio app to the growing list of available apps for SYNC® reflects Ford’s commitment to keep pace with customer desires and consumer electronics trends

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 10, 2012 – The in-car listening options for Ford vehicles equipped with SYNC® AppLink will soon grow by more than 50,000 when TuneIn Radio joins the list of smartphone apps that are compatible with the system.

Ford and Palo Alto, Calif.-based TuneIn announced at the 2012 International CES that the TuneIn Radio app will be available for use with vehicles equipped with SYNC AppLink, and will provide drivers with another listening option that can be controlled hands-free through voice commands.

AppLink builds on the award-winning SYNC connectivity system by enabling drivers to access and control apps on their smartphones by simply using their voice, allowing their hands to stay on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

“Smartphone apps have ingratiated themselves into the lives of consumers to such a degree that we have come to depend on them for much of our news and entertainment,” said Doug VanDagens, global director of Ford Connected Services. “With the addition of TuneIn, SYNC is reflecting that trend while dramatically increasing the global listening choices for Ford drivers.”

TuneIn is a free service that lets people listen to live local and global music, sports, talk and news by offering more than 50,000 AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations along with more than 1 million on-demand programs streaming from all corners of the world.

Using voice commands only, drivers of SYNC-equipped vehicles can control TuneIn and perform such tasks as search and listen to radio stations worldwide by artist or genre. For example, by saying, “Explore genre,” users can select hundreds of genres of music or talk stations like classic rock or German talk. Users also can search geographically by saying “Explore location.” TuneIn will then rank the most popular stations from the chosen location and start playing. More than 250 locations from around the world can be accessed via voice control.

“TuneIn captivates people by offering unprecedented access to listen to anything they want from local talk radio to live sports to music,” said John Donham, CEO of TuneIn. “With TuneIn, Ford drivers can now more easily enjoy the world’s audio from their favorite hometown stations to broadcasts half a world away – making listening even more global and personal.”

TuneIn is available in 10 languages and on more than 150 devices across all major smartphones and tablets, connected home stereos, smart TVs, car dashboards and online at www.tunein.com. The SYNC-enabled version of TuneIn Radio soon will be available through the iTunes App Store.

Ford SYNC AppLink is now available in 10 vehicles for the 2012 model year.

Driving the Future of Audio Services

Introducing Car Mode With Voice Command

We know that hundreds of thousands of you already enjoy listening to TuneIn in the car, and today we’re excited to announce a new feature called “Car Mode” that will make this experience easier and safer with the release of TuneIn 5.3 for Android.

With Car Mode, TuneIn becomes the first audio streaming service to offer people the ability to listen to their favorite music, sports and news simply by speaking a command into their phone or tablet. This groundbreaking feature is coupled with extra large buttons for easy viewing and control.

Here’s how it works. You’re in your car on a cloudy day and feel like brightening it up with some beach music. Using TuneIn, you turn on “Car Mode” from the main menu and tap the search button, saying, “Listen to Hawaiian music.” TuneIn instantly whisks you away to sunny Maui with the sounds of Polynesia filling your car.

Using Car Mode, you can also search by artist, album or song name. Let’s say you’re in the car and feel like listening to Adele. All you need to do is tap the search button and say “Play Adele.” TuneIn takes over from here, connecting you to the most popular station of a long list of every station in the world currently playing Adele. Now you’re listening to “Rolling In The Deep” from the top-selling artist’s album, “21.” If Adele is not currently on the air, TuneIn will automatically play a station that frequently plays her music.

You can also use Car Mode to search by cities or countries, so now you can listen to Prague or Australia just by the sound of your voice. There’s a whole world of listening out there – where do you want to hear?

Android owners can start enjoying Car Mode today. Just download the newest version of the TuneIn software and start listening to the world in a whole new way.

KQED Donation Pilot Successful

PALO ALTO, Calif. – November 21, 2011 – TuneIn, a free service that lets people listen to music, sports and news from around the world, today announced the launch of TuneIn Donate, which enables listeners to contribute to their favorite listener-supported stations. KQED, an NPR member station, is the first to pilot the new feature, currently available on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android smartphones. Based on the success of this test, TuneIn plans to offer TuneIn Donate to listener-supported and non-profit radio stations from around the world by the end of the year.

“TuneIn lets people listen to the widest variety of audio imaginable, from music and news to festivals and sporting events,” said John Donham, CEO of TuneIn. “Listener-supported stations like KQED and thousands of others are an important part of this rich, quality programming. Community-supported radio makes our lives better and TuneIn wants to mobilize listeners to show their support. This is just part of our effort to serve broadcasters by helping them connect with a growing digital audience.”

Since the implementation of TuneIn Donate KQED has seen a meaningful increase in traffic to its website donation page. TuneIn does not profit from these contributions, with 100 percent of the donations going to the intended stations.

“Our commitment to providing Northern Californians with engaging programming and a community-supported environment is at the heart of what drives KQED,” said Tim Olson, VP of Digital Media and Education, KQED. “TuneIn Donate is a new and easy way to help people connect with and support the programs that matter to them. KQED donors are some of the earliest adopters of new technologies. We are excited to be part of this ground-breaking initiative and are encouraged with the initial results.”

Non-profit or listener-supported stations that are interested in using TuneIn Donate should contact broadcasters@tunein.com to get more information on how to opt-in to the program. Listeners are encouraged to ask their favorite non-profit stations to participate.

TuneIn’s Weekend Wrap

It’s that time again. You’ve got another week under your heels, a weekend of endless possibilities ahead of you. You deserve to kick back, relax and enjoy. Let TuneIn guide the way.

If you’re not lucky enough to be cooling those heels in Zilker Park in Austin, Texas this weekend for the Austin City Limits Festival, you can still take the festival with you wherever you go. Our friends at KGSR will be broadcasting exclusively live from backstage and getting many of the great bands coming through the festival to sit down, chat and maybe even play a couple songs live on the air. Everybody from Aloe Blacc to Fitz & The Tantrums, Belle Brigade to Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and many more will be along, so check out KGSR all weekend long for all the best of the ACL Fest.

One last reminder as we pack up for the weekend, you have until tonight to enter our super fantastic contest with KEXP to get flown away to CMJ Music Marathon in New York this October. $35 or more gets you in on the action. Don’t wait, I want to party with you at the Ace in October!

Sports are heating up as well, all over the world. Here in the US, college and pro football seasons are well underway with some marquee matchups dotting the schedule this weekend. In the college ranks, #1 Oklahoma takes a trip down to Tallahassee to challenge #5 Florida State is one of the best early season games in recent memory. Check out Sooner and Seminole flagships throughout the day tomorrow for all the action leading up to kickoff. Meanwhile in the Pro ranks, fresh off their explosive performance in Miami last Monday, Tom Brady and the Patriots open their home schedule against their cross-country rivals in Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers. Patriots.com Radio is your best resource for the leadup to the game at The Razor in Foxborough on Sunday afternoon. (Okay, Charger fans. You can listen to ESPN 710 up in LA to get ready – if you REALLY want to…) And finally, halfway around the world, one of the most anticipated kickoffs in the Rugby World Cup is this weekend’s featured TuneIn Up All Night scrumdown with Australia taking on Ireland. TuneIn with Radio Sport NZ from 4am ET/1am PT (right after the Springboks no doubt dispatch of Fiji).

However you spend your weekend, we hope you spend it with TuneIn. Did we miss something you’ll have blasting (maybe on your awesome Jambox – which are totally awesome, by the way) while tending the grill this weekend? Let us know and join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter.

TuneIn’s Weekend Wrap

Spurred on by twitter follower @danirodriguezv, who told me on Twitter he couldn’t wait for some hot wrapness, let’s get right into the first “post-summer” wrap!

We would be remiss if we did not note the 10-year anniversary of one of America’s darkest days coming this weekend, as America and the world remember the fallen from the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. From New York to Shanksville, the Pentagon and beyond, millions will mark the occasion with remembrance services. TuneIn to CNN Radio for coverage all weekend long.

As we mentioned earlier on Facebook, in the UK this weekend, Bestival is ongoing with a diverse range of really cool acts. Everything from The Cure and Bjork headlining to Noah and the Whale, Crystal Castles, Katy B, Chromeo, Grandmaster Flash (how cool is that?), and a whole lot more. Bestival Radio is your resource for the best of the festival and they’ll be broadcasting all weekend long.

In sports, the NFL is back and you can catch all the action pre and post game with TuneIn to help you scout your favorite team, their opponents, or, and let’s be frank here for a moment, get your fantasy team set for all the action. Search by team or the NFL on TuneIn and find the best in NFL action. Meanwhile, down in the Land of the Long White Cloud, Rugby World Cup action is getting underway as the hosts New Zealand thrashed Tonga last night, 42-10. Games continue over the next few weeks, and Radio Sport NZ is your resource for the best in RWC action, leading up to the Final on October 23rd. TuneIn and find out if South Africa can bring home the William Webb Ellis trophy once again!

Wherever you are this weekend, make sure you enjoy it with TuneIn. Did we miss something you’re listening to! Be like @danirodriguezv and let us know on Twitter, or like the 8,000 of you who follow us each day on Facebook!

TuneIn’s Weekend Wrap

The United States will have one more summer fling this weekend as we kick back and celebrate Labor Day. But wherever you are, TuneIn has coverage of some awesome end-of-summer events that will lend some extra pizazz to your weekend. (That’s right, pizazz.)

Two great music festivals are going down this weekend, with Pearl Jam’s 20th Anniversary show taking place in Wisconsin, while Bumbershoot brings 3 days of great bands to Seattle Center. Pearl Jam Radio will have coverage of the weekend shows and KEXP will be covering Bumbershoot with live acts and interviews all three weekend days with bands like Fitz & the Tantrums, Vusi Mahlasela, Trombone Shorty and much more. Make sure to TuneIn all weekend long.

The end of summer means fall is coming and with it, college and high school football. TuneIn is your one best stop for games at all levels, and we have some great resources on our website to find your team’s game, when it’s on and how to listen.

And finally, it appears Tropical Storm Lee is about to spread rain (and possible flooding) all over the Gulf Coast. If you’re in the area or just want to keep up, check out WWL from New Orleans for coverage as the storm comes ashore.

We hope you enjoy your weekend, long or regular style, and we hope you make TuneIn a part of your end of summer celebrations. Did we miss something you’ll be listening to all weekend? Let us know, and join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter!
